A photochromic lens reacts to UV on its own, and you wait for it. These are electrochromic, so you decide. Press and hold the area just above the nose pads for five seconds and the lens moves between its full tint and a light tint that is close to clear. The colour itself does not change: a red frame goes from deep red to a pale red wash, and a blue frame does the same in blue. The gain is indoors, where a photochromic lens is still dark when you walk in off the street.
